🌍 HIPPS (High Integrity Pressure Protection System) Project

Akın Industry – International Project - Company Name Cannot Be Provided Due to Confidentiality Reasons.

Project Description:

In the HIPPS (High Integrity Pressure Protection System) study conducted within the scope of Akın Endüstri's international project portfolio, the SIL validation and verification processes of high-pressure protection systems were carried out by Özlem Akademi.

HIPPS systems ensure equipment, environmental, and human safety by preventing pressure limits from being exceeded in lines where process safety is critical.
This project has served as a reference study in which high-integrity safety instrumentation systems were verified in accordance with international standards (IEC 61508 / IEC 61511).

Akın Endüstri – International Project Scope

Project Description

As part of Akın Endüstri’s international project portfolio, Özlem Akademi carried out the SIL validation and SIL verification processes for the HIPPS (High Integrity Pressure Protection System) project.

HIPPS systems ensure equipment, environmental and personal safety by preventing pressure limits from being exceeded on lines critical to process safety.

This project served as a reference study demonstrating that safety instrumentation systems with a high integrity level were validated in accordance with international standards (IEC 61508 / IEC 61511).

Scope of Services:

1️⃣ SIL Validation

The SIL validation process was carried out to demonstrate the performance of the HIPPS system in terms of its design and functional safety objectives.

Work carried out within this scope:

  • Review of functional safety requirements (SRS)

  • Review of the safety loop for hypothetical process scenarios

  • Reliability analysis of the sensor, logic solver and final element chain

  • Calculation of probability-based PFDavg (Probability of Failure on Demand Average)

  • Mathematical verification that the SIL target (SIL 2 or SIL 3) has been met

Consequently, it has been documented that the HIPPS system design meets the targeted SIL level.

2️⃣ SIL Verification (Verification and Validation)

During the SIL Verification phase, the system’s compliance during installation, commissioning and maintenance processes was assessed.

In this phase, Özlem Academy:

  • Reviewed functional test plans (FAT & SAT).

  • Safety function test (Proof Test) results under real-world field conditions were analysed.

  • Equipment MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) values were compared with manufacturer data.

  • Redundancy, bypass management and diagnostic times were audited.

  • A verification report was prepared for the functional safety lifecycle.

All results were found to comply with the requirements of the IEC 61511:2016 standard, “Functional Safety – Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process Industry Sector”.

Achievements and Results:

Through this project, Akın Endüstri:

  • has demonstrated the compliance of HIPPS systems with the internationally recognised SIL 3 requirements,

  • has obtained SIL Validation and Verification reports that quantitatively document plant safety performance,

  • and has elevated its Process Safety Management (PSM) system to a higher level.

As Özlem Academy, through this work conducted for HIPPS systems, both design verification and field performance testing have been completed together, and the project has been established as a reference compliant with international safety standards.

CONCLUSION:

This project demonstrates Özlem Academy’s expertise in the field of functional safety and its mastery of international process safety standards.

The HIPPS project carried out for Akın Endüstri has been a significant milestone in the verification of high-integrity safety systems.
